MATCH REPORT: ROTHERHAM UNITED WOMEN 4-0 SPENNYMOOR TOWN

Rotherham United Women booked a spot in the Women's FA Cup first round with a dominant display against Spennymoor Town.

Two goals from Stacey Buxton, a penalty from Hannah McWilliams and a composed finish from sub Laura Bartup were the difference at the Rotherham Hospice Community Stadium.

In front of a record crowd, the Millers started strongly and imposed themselves on the contest.

Jasmine Saxton had a chance to break the deadlock after just 8 minutes but Moors keeper Philippa Hunter was quickly off her line to smother the forward's shot.

Saxton again came close to the opener after seizing on a loose pass in the Spennymoor defence, only for the visitors to recover and clear.

The breakthrough wasn't far behind, though, as Stacey Buxton turned smartly to crash a half-volley home off the right-hand post.

Ten minutes later, the Millers had the chance to double their lead from the penalty spot, and it was Saxton involved again, skipping past the full-back and being clipped as she ran clean through.

Hannah McWilliams, so clinical from the spot at Lower Hopton two weeks ago, again took responsibility. Hunter got a hand to the well-struck shot but was unable to keep it out, as McWilliams made it three FA Cup goals for the season.

She could have netted a second before the break, only to scoop over the bar from 8 yards out.

Home keeper Ellie Sharpe was called into action to smother a rare Moors attack, before the Millers extended their lead right on half-time.

It was Buxton who claimed the goal, meeting Saxton's cross at the near post and watching her shot loop over the stranded keeper via a deflection.

Half-time: Rotherham United Women 3-0 Spennymoor Town

The second-half was a tighter affair but club skipper Lauren Winter will be barely able to believe she didn't open her account for the season.

Twice she met inviting crosses with power but each time the ball narrowly missed the target.

Former Derby County and Sheffield United striker Chené Muir made her debut on the hour mark and was quickly in the thick of things, drawing a fine stop from Hunter.

Hannah McWilliams also came close, being denied her second by a goal-line clearance,

It was Bartup who made it four on 86 minutes - ten minutes after taking to the field - as Muir played her through to dummy the keeper and roll into the empty net.

Four goals, a clean sheet and a place in the hat for the next round - all in all, a perfect Sunday afternoon for the Millers.

What a thoroughly enjoyable afternoons entertainment, this was my first visit of the 26/27 season and I wasn't disappointed. A lovely day, big crowd and a brilliant team showing, they dominated Spennymoor from start to finish and played some very good football, the future looks bright and we go on into the first round of the ladies FA Cup, well done to all involved.
