Rotherham United Women look forward to a local derby against SJR Worksop this weekend as they aim to shake off FA Cup heartbreak.

The Millers lost out in a penalty shootout to Thornaby FC on Sunday following a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Roundwood

Wing forward Delia Hurdiss scored the Reds’ goal after spotting Thornaby stopper Phoebe Townsend off her line and spectacularly lobbing in from long range.

Debutant keeper Ashleigh Ridsdel-Harrison pulled off a great stop to give the home side the edge in the shootout but the visitors eventually won out 4-2 on spot kicks.

The keeper had kept her side in the game with a string of sharp saves, the most impressive coming in the final minute, while Thornaby stood firm in the face of the Millers attack.

Promoted SJR Worksop will provide a tough test on Sunday (kick-off 2pm) after a high-scoring start to the season.

But manager Rob Hilton said he believed the intensity of Sunday’s match would stand his side in good stead.

“We’ve had a tough game against a very good side so if we begin the match at Worksop at the same level we will certainly give them plenty to think about,” he said.

“We believe our current league position is a false one and we are moving in the right direction.

“We are keen to come away with three points and continue the momentum we’ve been building lately.”

Meanwhile, the Young Millers have continued their strong start to the league season after an incredible late victory at Middlewood Rovers.

The Under-21s were pegged back 10 minutes into stoppage time but captain Georgia Harris found a winner two minutes later.

The 4-3 win, with two goals each from Harris and Tegan Milner, leaves the Under-21s top of the table after seven games.

They host Handsworth at Herringthorpe Stadium on Sunday (kick-off at 2pm).
