Football can be a game of fine margins at times.

One side comes inches from a match-winning goal just minutes before the other finds that crucial breakthrough.

So it turned out at Roundwood on Sunday as Ashleigh Ridsdel-Harrison saved brilliantly five minutes from time, paving the way for Sidni Simmons to smash home the decider deep into stoppage time.

The Millers were indebted repeatedly to Ridsdel-Harrison, who pulled off a string of sharp stops in this 1-0 win over SJR Worksop, Emily Myatt in particular being left aghast by the Rotherham keeper’s reactions.

SJR’s direct approach breached the Millers backline several times but Ridsdel-Harrison was in unbeatable form as she claimed a clean sheet with a player of the match performance.

Amanda Millar came closest for Rotherham before the break, firing just wide after some slick approach play, while the Worksop defence was relieved on at least two occasions to scramble the ball away as danger threatened.

This may not have been the dominant Millers of recent home wins, but there was no shortage of fighting spirit or resilience, particularly when the visitors’ tackling crossed the legal line.

SJR captain Charlotte Finch – whose long-range free kick forced Ridsdel-Harrison to tip over athletically – was yellow-carded for taking out Millar.

She was followed into the book by centre back partner Lauren Cundy for a cynical foul on Lexie Butterworth five minutes into added time which presented Simmons with her golden late chance.

Worksop keeper Emily Hallam had been called into action minutes earlier to deny debutante sub Lily-May Jackson with a sharp reflex save.

But she had no answer to Simmons’ lofted effort from the corner of the box, clawing fresh air as the full back’s supreme strike grabbed all three points to spark jubilation on and off the pitch at Roundwood.

The goal gave the Millers a sixth league win in a row as the push for promotion hots up.
