Rotherham United Women 3-2 Kenilworth & Long Itchington

Two late moments of individual brilliance by supersub Maddy Wilson booked Rotherham United Women a spot in the first round proper of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup.

Wilson had only been on the Roundwood pitch a matter of seconds on Sunday when she slotted home to bring the Millers level at 2-2 with visitors Kenilworth & Long Itchington Ladies ten minutes from time.

And she applied the perfect ending in stoppage time, crashing home another long-range effort to secure a 3-2 win and break the Warwickshire side’s hearts.

Things had appeared decidedly less rosy for the Millers at half time, when Pete Jarvis’ side went in 2-1 down, Jessie Broadhurst’s coolly-taken opener having been cancelled out by two long-range strikes from Long Itchington.

Jarvis played his hand with the three substitutions permitted after the break and Wilson, brought into the fray as time ticked away, proved the trump card.

First she collected a pass on the edge of the box, neatly cut inside and then crashed a left-footer past the keeper.

And as the match entered injury time, she was fed by Jess Jones and let fly from the 20 yards, looping a lobbed shot into the top right-hand corner, sparking delirious celebrations on the pitch and the terraces.

It was Wilson’s second double within a fortnight after she also played a key role in an 8-0 league victory over Long Eaton United.

The Millers return to league action against Anstey Nomads on Sunday, with kick-off at 2pm at Roundwood.

Meanwhile, the Millers’ Reserves will also be back in action with renewed confidence following a 4-2 South Yorkshire derby victory against Sheffield Wednesday at Herringthorpe Stadium.Two goals from Georgia Harris and one each from Mia McDonald and Emily Ward saw Dave Vine’s side secure their first league victory of the season.

The Reserves next opponents are Socrates Ladies FC at Thurcroft Hub on Sunday. Kick-off is at 2pm and admission is free.
