Rotherham United Women have brought one of Rotherham football’s most recognisable voices into the heart of their new era, with John Breckin joining the RUWFC board.

The immediate target is promotion, while the wider vision is to build a women’s football club strong enough to keep climbing and, one day, put Rotherham on the Women’s Super League map.

For RUWFC, Breckin’s arrival is about far more than a name: it is about football knowledge, trust, local pride and understanding what the game means to people in this town.

Breckin is one of the most respected figures in Rotherham football. He made more than 400 league appearances for the Millers and remains a well-known and trusted figure across the town.

But it is his understanding of Rotherham, its people and its football community that makes his appointment so important.

RUWFC want to build a team that can win on the pitch, but also a club that girls across Rotherham can see, support and aspire to play for.

Breckin, who also has a daughter, understands the importance of giving girls in the town a visible pathway and a club to believe in.

He has already attended pre-season training to show his support for the players and coaching staff and his insight will prove invaluable as preparations ramp up for the new season.

Co-owners Phil Smith and Scott Thorpe know Breckin personally and believe his character, football judgement and connection to Rotherham make him exactly the type of person needed as RUWFC moves forward.

Scott said: “John is Rotherham through and through. He knows football, he knows people and he knows this town.

“Phil and I both know John personally, and that matters. We trust him. We know what he stands for, and we know he will tell us straight.

“This is not about putting a famous name on a board. This is about bringing in someone who understands Rotherham, understands football and understands what standards should look like.

“We want promotion, we want momentum and we want to build a club that gives girls in Rotherham a genuine pathway.

“The long-term ambition has to be big. If we are going to do this properly, why would we not aim to one day take Rotherham United Women towards the WSL?”

Phil said: “John knows Rotherham, he knows football and he knows what a proper football club should feel like.

“Just as importantly, we know him and we trust him. That honesty and experience is invaluable when you are trying to build something properly.

“We are ambitious, but ambition has to be backed up by the right people and the right culture.

“John gives us another strong football voice around the table, and that can only help as we move forward.

“This is about building a club that can compete now, grow properly and give Rotherham a women’s team with real long-term ambition.”

John Breckin said: “Rotherham is my town and football has been a massive part of my life.

“When Scott and Phil spoke to me about what they wanted to do with the women’s team, I wanted to be involved.

“There is a real opportunity here to build something positive. It needs to be done properly, with good people, good standards and the right intentions.

“I know Rotherham people. If they see something being done properly, and they see it being done for the right reasons, they will get behind it.

“Women’s football has huge potential here. If we can help give girls in Rotherham a proper pathway and a club to look up to, then that is something worth backing.

“You have to build step by step, but there is no reason Rotherham should not aim high.”

RUWFC will continue preparations for the new season, with further key announcements expected both on and off the pitch.

The message is simple: Rotherham United Women are building with purpose, ambition and pride.
